Weldon City Schools Announces 2020 – 2021 Beginning Teachers of the Year

Weldon, NC— September 23, 2020 â€” On Tuesday, September 22, 2020, Weldon City Schools Beginning Teacher Coordinator, Mrs. Krissy Pittman-Martin, hosted a districtwide virtual teacher of the year recognition.

Ms. Imani Cooper will serve as the district representative.  The district will enter Ms. Cooper as a candidate of the North Carolina Center for Advancement of Teaching (NCCAT) 2020 Beginning Teacher of the Year. NCCAT process is to honor beginning teachers and retain teachers who show promise as excellent teachers and education leaders in North Carolina Public and Charter Schools. 

The eligibility requirements for the Beginning Teacher of the Year for participants are as follows: successful completion of 1st year of teaching in NC Public School continued employment in the same district or charter for 2nd year, met minimum full year of teaching as determined by the NC Department of Public Instruction, lateral entry experience, and Teach for America experience, and must teach students directly for at least 70% of the time.  

Beginning teachers celebrated on school and district level were Ms. Imani Cooper, Weldon STEM High; Ms. Kelsi Jensen, Weldon Elementary Global Academy; Ms. Floydesha McDonald, Weldon Middle School; and Ms. Angelica Walton, Roanoke Valley Early College.

Dr. Jerry V. Congleton, Interim Superintendent, stated, "We are very proud to have each of the candidates as a part of the Weldon City Schools Team.  Congratulations to Ms. Cooper, who is an outstanding role model for students and a great teacher. I am excited to see what the future will hold as Ms. Cooper participates in the NCCAT competition.
